Charles E. Hartsoe is the former Chairman, Department of Recreation, Virginia Commonwealth University. He currently serves as the Executive Director of the National Recreation Foundation. Previously he worked as Chairman and Professor, Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies, Temple University; Coordinator, Recreation and Leisure Studies Program, Temple University; Associate Professor of Recreation and Parks, Pennsylvania State University; Undergraduate Program Director, Department of Recreation and Park Administration, University of Illinois; Assistant Executive Director, National Recreation Association; Executive Secretary, National Recreation Congress, National Recreation Association; and others. He received his B.S. degree from Springfield College, his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Illinois. Some of his professional affiliations include: Treasurer, American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration; member of Board of Trustees, National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA); American Recreation and Park Society; Society of Park and Recreation Educators; and Virginia Recreation and Park Society.
