Kenneth J. Smithee

Kenneth J. Smithee, retired, was Director of Genesee County Parks and Recreation Commission in Flint, Michigan (1967-88). Other positions he held included Public Affaires Director and County Parks and Recreation Specialist for the National Recreation and Park Association (1965-67) and Director of the Maricopa County Parks and Recreation Department in Phoenix, Arizona (1957-65). He received his B.S. degree in Education from the University of Arizona (1954) and M.A. degree in Recreation from Central Michigan University (1974).

Some professional affiliations in which he was active include: President, Arizona Parks and Recreation Association (1959); President, Arizona Conservation Council (1960, 1962, 1963): Secretary, Governor's State of Arizona Recreation Coordinating Committee (1964); President, National Association of County Parks and Recreation Officials (1970); President, American Park and Recreation Society (1971-72); Member, Board of Trustees, National Recreation and Park Association (1971-74, 1978-82); Charter Member Council on Accreditation (1974-78, 1979-82); President, National Recreation and Park Association (1980-81); and President, American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration (1986-87).

Special awards or recognitions he has received include: Fellow Award, Arizona Parks and Recreation Association (1963); Presidential Certificate, National Association of Counties (1963, 1966); Distinguished Fellow Award, American Park and Recreation Society (1972); Fellowship Award, Michigan Recreation and Park Association (1974); and National Distinguished Professional Award, NRPA (1988).
