H. Boyd Lee was appointed as Director of the Greenville Recreation and Parks Department in 1969. Prior to his appointment he was Assistant Director for two years. He is a graduate of North Carolina State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Recreation and Parks Administration.
His professional accomplishments include: Certified Leisure Professional; NRPA Board of Trustees; Select Member of the American Academy of Parks and Recreation Administration; Outstanding Alumnus Award from North Carolina State University’s Parks, Recreation, and Tourism Management; Appointed by the Governor of North Carolina--Member of The North Carolina Statewide Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan; Member and Past President of North Carolina Recreation & Park Society; Past Chairman, Southern Regional Council; Recipient of the North Carolina Recreation and Park Society Fellow Award; Recipient of the NRPA Southern Region Harold D. Meyer Award; Recipient of the Governor's Award--Order of the Long Leaf Pine; The Rose Award; Boyd’s impact on the quality of life for the citizens is evident by the growth and improvements that have taken place under his direction: Staff has increased from 7 full time employees to 56 fulltime employees and 150 part time employees; programs have increased from 25 to over 500; and park land has increased from 110 acres to over 1300 acres; Facilities acquired and built include: Fitness Center, Golf Course, Skatepark, Soccer Complex; Arts and Crafts Center and Teen Center. On July 22, 2001, a ceremony was held to honor Boyd Lee as the community named the largest recreational park in the city in his honor, H. Boyd Lee Park. Greenville was chosen in 2004 as Sportstown USA for North Carolina by Sports Illustrated and NRPA.
