Jayne Miller has served as the Superintendent of the nationally renowned Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) under the direction of a nine member elected policy-making board since November 2010. The MPRB is accredited by the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA), receiving its initial accreditation in 2010. The MPRB has also been recognized by the Trust for Public Land in 2013, 2014 and 2015, and 2016 as the #1 Park System in the United States. In 2016, the MPRB was selected as a finalist for the NRPA Gold Medal Award. The MPRB was also selected to co-host the International Urban Park Conference, Greater & Greener 2017, with the City of St. Paul in July and August 2017 to showcase Minneapolis’ innovative park development, programming, and services. The MPRB is a diverse system of land and water spanning 6,801 acres of parkland and water featuring 179 park with 22 lakes, 49 recreation centers, 112 playgrounds, 66 pools, 13 golf facilities, 12 gardens, 200+ miles of biking and walking paths, 397 multipurpose sports fields, 5 outdoor performance stages, nature sanctuaries and the 102 miles of Grand Rounds trails that together annually serve approximately 21.4 million visitors.
Prior to her appointment as Superintendent of the MPRB, Jayne served as Director of the Huron-Clinton Metropolitan Authority (HCMA), a five-county regional park system in southeast Michigan in 2010. She served as the Community Services Area Administrator for the City of Ann Arbor from 2003-2010. Prior to her service as the Community Services Area Administrator for the City of Ann Arbor, Jayne served as the City of Ann Arbor’s Park and Recreation Manager, Recreation Facilities and Services Manager, Recreation Facility Supervisor and the City’s Bicycle Coordinator. Jayne’s service with the City of Ann Arbor was close to 23 years.
Prior to her work in Ann Arbor, Jayne worked as a parks and recreation professional with various organizations in Maryland, Ohio, Kansas and Nebraska. Jayne holds a Master’s Degree in Recreation Administration from the University of Maryland and a Bachelor's Degree in Social Science Composite and Physical Education from Midland Lutheran College in Nebraska. Jayne is committed to giving back professionally and personally. She serves as a board member of the World Urban Parks, City Parks Alliance, Indiana University Executive Development Program, Sports Minneapolis, Meet Minneapolis, the Minneapolis Urban League and the St. Anthony Falls Heritage Board; and previously served on the board of the Rocky Mountain Revenue and Management School. Jayne shares her knowledge and experience regularly locally, regionally, nationally and internationally to organizations and at conferences. Jayne also is serving as a Founding Member of Editorial Board for the Journal of Recreation, Parks, and Tourism in Public Health. She also volunteers as youth mentor through Bolder Options a non-profit organization working with at-risk youth that is focused on healthy youth development. [current as of Sept 2016]
