John Curran

John Curran is currently the Director of Parks and Recreation for the Tinley Park – Park District since 1996 and previously served in the same position for the Alsip Park District for 16 years. In 1993 Alsip Park District received the National Parks and Recreation Association Gold Medal Award for Excellence in Parks and Recreation Management. During his tenure John has spearheaded two successful referendums and completed over 30 million dollars in capital improvement projects. The Tony Bettenhausen Recreation Center and the White Water Canyon Water Park have both been awarded the IPRA Outstanding Facility Award in 2003.

John is currently on the IPRA Board and is Chairman of the Board for 2012. He has served on twelve different IPRA Committees and Task Forces since 1979 and previously served on the IPRA Board of Directors 1989-1992. John has also served on several committees for the South Suburban Park and Recreation Professional Association as well as President in 1981-82. John has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Recreation Park Administration from Western Illinois University and has been a Certified Park and Recreation Professional since 1989.

Locally John has served on the Board of Directors for the Oak Park Avenue Mainstreet Association, Chairman of the Tinley Park Parade Committee, and is an active member in the Tinley Park Chamber of Commerce. He also serves on the Mayor’s Health and Wellness Committee. John is married and resides in Tinley Park with his wife Lynn and two children Tom and Kathy. [current as of August 2012].
