Cornelius Amory Pugsley Medal - Call for Nominations Closes June 9, 2023

The Pugsley Medal purpose is to honor outstanding contributions in parks and conservation. The Pugsley Medal is awarded to citizens, political leaders, park and conservation professionals who have dedicated their efforts to the advancement of parks and conservation at the local, regional, state, or national levels. Medal recipients inspire us as they have accomplished great things in furthering the parks and conservation agenda in the United States in their community in their region or state or nationally.

2023 Finalists Announced for the National Gold Medal Awards in Parks and Recreation Management

In announcing the 2023 National Gold Medal Finalists, AAPRA Executive Director Jane H. Adams shared, “Each agency is commended for submitting a 2023 application for the prestigious National Gold Medal Award.  The Academy congratulates the 20 local park and recreation agencies, the four armed forces installations, and the four state park systems on receiving the Finalist award. Nominations Open April 13 to June 9 for Academy Member Class of 2023

Academy members are encouraged to nominate an outstanding professional, educator or urban director for membership. Minimum requirements:

  • Practitioner:  minimum 15 years of high-level administrative experience with a BS or BA degree 
  • Educator:  rank of full Professor or served in a high-level administrative position in higher education and recognized as an educator for combined minimum period of 15 years
  • Urban Director: Director or CEO of major Federal, State, Regional, County (or Parish), or City with a population of 500,000 or more 

Academy members may nominate a maximum of two (2) individuals for membership annually. Learn more here

Call for Best Master Thesis / Special Project Paper Open April 10 to June 16

In support of its research goals, AAPRA annually hosts a research competition that alternates between best master’s thesis / special project (odd years) and best doctoral dissertation (even years). The following three awards will be given in 2023: One (1) Best Paper Award of $750 and up to $500 in travel funds to attend the NRPA 2023 Annual Conference in Dallas, TX. Two (2) Certificate of Merit awards to two Best Paper finalists

6 Tips to Nominate a Future Academy Member

The Academy’s Membership Committee hosted a Zoom on “6 Tips to Nominate a Future Academy Member.” Committee members shared their tips about identifying a nominee ensuring they have the required 15 years of high level of administrative experience as well as ensuring your nominee knows about the Academy’s JEDI pledge.
